    Native American Links

While the Order of the Arrow is a program of service and leadership for the Boy Scouts of America, one of the attractive features is that the inspirational ceremonies OA members use for induction and rededication are based on the cmenutures and traditions of America's first nations. Although one need not have any interest at all in American Indian crafts or lore to be a valuable and effective member of the OA, many members develop a hobby of ceremonies or dance or some other aspect of native cmenutures. You may find the following links interesting:

Because the Order of the Arrow was started along the Delaware River in Pennsylvania, the original ceremonies were based on the legends and customs of the Lenni-Lenape, or Delaware, Indians. Today, the majority or Lenni-Lenape are based in Oklahoma. To learn more of the modern-day tribe and their affairs, please visit the Lenni-Lenape Tribal Site.

An excellent site on Southern Plains Pow-wow Dancing. Pow-wows, or Indian celebrations, happen all over the country all year round. Many OA members take up one form or another of contemporary powwow dancing. Also visit PowWows.com where you can find out about different Pow Wows all over the country.

The Powersource Native American Art and Education Center has some excellent information on powwows

A feature at local powwows has always been the Wandering Bull Trading Post. The Bullock family and their friends have been long supporters of Scouting and the OA. They carry a wide selection of craft materials and supplies, and are always willing to answer questions or give hints and advice. These guys are great people!

Another great provider of Native American craft materials is Crazy Crow Trading Post. Although they're farther away from our lodge geographically, they've always provided great service to members of our team, and we recommend them highly.

Other places where you can buy Native American Crafts are:

    Claw, Antler & Hide Co.
    Centralia Hide & Fur Co.
    Grey Owl Crafts

Miscellaneous Order of the Arrow and Boy Scouting links:

And for a little bit of humor, the Ordeal Bloopers Site contains stories of less-than-textbook-perfect OA inductions. (Note: For members only; you need to use the logon of "oa" and the Admonition as a password to view this site.)
